Introdução
Desde sempre, um dos grandes sonhos do Homem foi construir uma máquina que lhe permitisse viajar no tempo, de modo a poder observar os factos mais importantes da história humana e os acontecimentos que marcaram as principais etapas da história do nosso planeta. Ao longo dos tempos, vários modelos daquela máquina foram experimentados, mas nenhum se revelou tão eficaz como aquele que os geólogos têm utilizado: as rochas e, em particular, as rochas que contenham os restos dos seres vivos que viveram na Terra em determinado momento - os fósseis.
